Mixed Metallics & High Contrast for a Glam Look

I always like to do more of the work I love, in any way, which is why I’m so glad to be a part of this blog! (Thanks Ang, wink!) As a set decorator on reality shows, I create living spaces for people I’ve never met (and never will, most likely), and it all happens really fast.

On the project I’m about to show you, the production designer and I had to design a room that served a few functions for a team of contestants, and please the client (aka the executive producers). It had to look expensive, serve as a workspace, a lounge, and of course, it had to look good on television. The other slightly challenging element: decorating with mostly in-stock pieces we could get in about 3 weeks or less. It is possible…  having a great upholsterer is a huge plus!

We used a mix of metallic and reflective finishes to make it feel glamorous, as well as eclectic. Since we could not get the étagère we wanted in time, one that we could get was painted copper. The pale tone-on-tone carpet/area rug combo felt elegant right away (perhaps because almost-white carpet is so high-maintenance?!) Pale grey flooring also bounces light upward; making anyone in the room look pretty and well-lit. We then used black lacquer in the furniture and custom built-ins to pull the room together.

Enjoy, and see you next week!

Don’t Be Afraid To Go BOLD

Everyone likes a hard wood floor or even plush carpeting, but why not make a statement with your flooring? Check out these fun ideas to make your flooring pop and become the highlight of any room.

1. Patterned Floors – Flooring never had more style! Create dramatic effects using stencils and paint on wood, concrete and even vinyl. This is a great weekend project for updating old or worn flooring. Check out these DIY tips from Design Sponge:

2. Carpet Tiles – Carpet Tiles used to be boring, but not anymore! Now you can find graphic patterns and funky shapes that will definitely add pizazz to your space. The best thing, carpet tiles are family-friendly and stylish at the same time. If you have a spill, you only have to replace the individual tile and not the whole carpet. Ingenious!

3. Tiles – Yes, I know! Tiles aren’t anything new but instead of using something traditional, take a leap and go for a geometric or graphic pattern.

I hope these ideas were helpful and gave you tons of new options for flooring. Remember, don’t be afraid to be BOLD. Now go forth and decorate!
