Duro Olowu: Fashion Meets Art

Fashion Designer, Duro Olowu, has set up shop at the Lower East Side gallery, Salon 94 Freemans with “Material” a pop-up exhibition for his 2012 spring collection. A favorite of First Lady Michelle Obama, this designer is taking the idea of fashion as art to the masses. The pop-up shop and group show is as he calls it an assemblage of eye-catching objects that have inspired him along the way. The show features his own designs plus vintage photographs by Hamidou Maiga, woven canvases by Tony Cox and ceramics by Mat Merkel Hess. Artist Glenn Ligon also hand-painted a limited-edition set of his book Glenn Ligon: Some Changes especially for the exhibit. If you’re in the area be sure to check out the show, it runs from February 9th through March 4th.

Behind every great man is…
Of course I have to mention Duro Olowu’s extraordinary wife, Thelma Golden, Director & Chief Curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem. What a power couple!
